The evolution of greener dentistry

Each year, Earth Day sparks conversations about sustainability across many industries — including healthcare. In dentistry, sustainability hasn’t always been a central talking point. Patient care, hygiene control and efficiency usually take priority in a busy dental office.

But over the years, sustainability has quietly become part of how many practices operate, largely thanks to shifts in technology that naturally reduce waste and streamline operations. Looking back, it’s interesting to see how the modern dental office has evolved in ways that support both efficiency and environmental awareness.

The move away from paper

One of the most noticeable changes in dental offices in recent decades has been the transition from paper-heavy workflows to digital systems. Paper charts, printed forms, mailed appointment reminders and bills were once the standard. Today, many dental offices rely on digital tools to manage patient records, forms and communication electronically. Not only have online forms and digital treatment plans and updates helped reduce the need and waste of paper, but its also allowed for patients to access information easier. For front desk teams, these changes mean fewer tedious tasks and more efficient schedules all around. While the switch to fully paperless isn’t quite a realistic possibility for most offices yet, over 80% of offices in the US are currently using electronic dental records. Storing 1,000 paper charts requires about 24 square feet of storage space, so while the entry into the digital era has come with some learning curves, it’s also allowed for unintentional sustainability initiatives.

Technology changing the workflow (and utilities!)

Advances in software options have also influenced sustainability in ways that weren’t necessarily the original goal. Modern dental offices have adapted the use of cloud or server-based practice management software to handle extensive administrative tasks. A huge perk to utilizing these newer workflow forms is the capability to offer remote access and flexibility. Practices are able to save on utility costs and usage by making this shift, as well as the additional benefit of being able to manage multiple locations/practices under the same ownership — a huge resource saver!

A growing awareness of everyday waste

While clinical safety requires many single-use materials, and is always the number one concern in healthcare settings, dental teams have become more aware of other areas where small changes can make a difference. Some practices are taking a closer look at:

  • Supply ordering habits and packaging waste: With the growing popularity and push toward technology in administrative tasks, over 60% of dental practices have shifted to digital procurement platforms in the last two decades. This has reduced inventory mistakes and number of expired products.
  • Recycling programs for certain office materials: Years ago, recycling efforts in healthcare fields were primarily driven by safety regulations and compliance. Modern offices now prioritize sustainability with routine material audits, brand-specific take-backs and community donation programs.
  • Reducing unnecessary printing in administrative workflows
  • Digital communication with patients whenever possible

The bottom line: These adjustments are often simple, but as the importance of simple sustainability practices has become more prominent in our society, its helped healthcare professionals find new ways to go green where they can.
